Experiments on Neoclassical Asymmetric Superbanana Ripple Transport in Electron Plasma

چکیده
Ripples in magnetic or electrostatic confinement fields give rise to trapping separatrices, and the conventional neoclassical helical ripple transport describes phenomena coming from the collisional trapping/detrapping of particles in the helical ripple wells. Our experiments and novel theory have now characterized a new kind of neoclassical transport processes arising from chaotic (collisionless) separatrix crossings, which occur due to equilibrium E×B plasma rotation along poloidally asymmetric (ruffled) separatrices, and due to wave-induced separatrix modulations. Enhanced superbanana transport caused by chaotic scattering across an asymmetric separatrix
Abstract This paper discusses a novel “chaotic” form of superbanana transport, and compares theory to experiments on nonneutral plasmas. Superbanana transport is caused by particles that cross local trapping separatrices (magnetic or electric ripples) in the presence of field “errors” such as toroidal magnetic curvature. Traditionally, collisions (at rate ν) cause separatrix crossings, with res...
متن کاملNeoclassical transport and plasma mode damping caused by collisionless scattering across an asymmetric separatrix
Plasma loss due to apparatus asymmetries is a ubiquitous phenomenon in magnetic plasma confinement. When the plasma equilibrium has locally-trapped particle populations partitioned by a separatrix from one another and from passing particles, the asymmetry transport is enhanced. The trapped and passing particle populations react differently to the asymmetries, leading to the standard 1= and ffif...

متن کاملNon-Local Simulation of the Formation of Neoclassical Ambipolar Electric Field in Non-Axisymmetric Configurations
Neoclassical transport simulation code (FORTEC-3D) applicable to non-axisymmetric configurations is developed. A new hybrid simulation model in which ion transport is solved by using the δ f Monte-Carlo method including the finite-orbit-width effects, while electron transport is solved by a reduced ripple-averaged kinetic equation, is adopted. This model makes it possible to simulate the dynami...
متن کاملNeoclassical transport in the helical reversed-field pinch.
Test particle evaluation of the diffusion coefficient in a fusion plasma in the reversed-field pinch (RFP) configuration shows distinct similarities with stellarators when the plasma spontaneously evolves towards a helical shape. The almost total absence of superbanana particles at the levels of helical deformation seen in experiment (Bh/B=10%) causes transport to be proportional to collision f...
